Spam Filtering for Netscape Communicator & Mozilla Thunderbird



This document focuses on the setup of filters to move and eliminate messages tagged as spam by SpamAssassin. This walk-through will enable you to create such rules to move junk mail to other folders, delete it immediately, or highlight for later viewing. This document will focus on client-only configuration. Please also check the examples page along with the SpamAssassin configuration page.

Open Netscape Messenger.

 

Start by selecting File from the menu options. The select New from the menu that appears. Select Folder from sub-menu that appears when you selected New.

 

The New Folder window will appear. Enter a Name for the new folder such as: Junk Mail. Then click on the drop down menu entitled Create as a subfolder of. Select Local Folders and then select choose this for the parent.

 

Click the OK button to finish.

 

Your new folder should appear in the folder list on the left hand side of the mail client.

 

Now select the Tools menu and then select the Message Filters option.

 

This opens the Message Filters window. Ensure that the proper email address is selected from the Filters For drop down box. Then click the New button.

 

This opens the Filer Rules dialog box. Please use the image below to fill out the screen on your system.

 

Now that you are finished, you can click OK to contine.

 

Back at the Message Filters dialog box, your new rule should be present in the box. Click on the rule once and select the Run Now button to run the rule on your Inbox.

 

It appears that the spam has been removed from the Inbox.

 

Select the Junk Mail folder from the folder list to ensure that the tagged spam has been moved. Everything appears to have been a success. You may want to experiment with the filters in Netscape, they can be used to make your mail client work for you. If you have further questions, please feel free to ask them in our support forums.
